The Stigma in STEP

December 12, 2016

I’m the one who helps my step kids with homework, I’m the one the who cooks them dinner every single night, I’m the one that is there for them through thick and thin. So then WHY is there a twinge of awkwardness every time I say to someone, “I’m their STEP-mom”. Why aren’t I immensely proud to announce this position? We have a great relationship but somehow whenever I say the title “stepmom”, I feel like there is a slight implication that I am lesser than a “real” mom. I feel like I’m met with, “oh what does she know, she’s just the step parent.” But in reality, I am working just as hard as any parent for the well-being of these kids and I feel like we all deserve to say “I’M A STEPMOM” loud and proud. Am I alone here? Does anyone else feel this weird undertone?

You can see my step kids look like me so you can imagine how many times people assume I am the bio mom and I feel like I need to correct them. I am always torn if I should or shouldn't bother correcting people...
